POSTSCRIPT: I went to the USA with both the Specials and the Selecter at the beginning of the 1980s. Neither I nor the bands had any idea how influential those few club dates would be. Over the following decade, a third wave of ska, fuelled by 2-Tone, exploded in the US with bands such as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (formed in 1983) and the Toasters (formed 1981) from the East Coast, and the Uptones (formed in 1981) in California at the helm. The Uptones influenced Operation Ivy, who became Rancid, and an entire Orange County ska scene that produced such exciting combos as the Aquabats. The Bosstones helped popularise the new ska-punk sound that merged the two musical forms, playing ska at a punk pace. Ska-core later blended ska with hardcore punk. But bands like the Toasters went for a more 2-Tone influenced trad ska style. Singer Robert ‘Bucket’ Hingley launched the hugely important Moon Ska Records label, whose latest incarnation, Moon Ska World, continues to release great ska acts such as the Dub City Rockers, the Big and the brilliant but batty Rhoda Dakar.

As I write this in 2009, the Specials are back together (without Jerry) playing to packed houses. And Suggsy’s a regular TV presenter. Madness, who split in 1986 and re-formed six years later, have won new critical acclaim for their latest album The Liberty of Norton Folgate. Lee Thompson jokes, ‘It’s harder to get out of this band than the fucking Foreign Legion.’
